Hi! I've been trying to research a phrase for a friend of mine. I'm not sure where she found it, but she can't find anything about it. So, I've taken up her cause and have been trying to find an answer. The phrase is:

Argus Apocraphex

Now, my research has come up with the following:

Greek or Latin based
Apocraphex may roughly be translated as "away from light" (???)
Argus in a Greek mythological 100-eyed giant

Does any of this make sense to anyone? I'm not sure whether it is an actual phrase or if it's a name of something, or if it even translates smoothly. I'm really curious myself now and am hoping some kind soul may have an answer they can share with me!

Argus was Greek, and that second word looks Greek too. It's not in my Latin dictionary anyway.

I have just realised that I have a Bible called the "Apocrypha", which means "hidden", or in the case of my Bible "hidden writing". The definition seems to confirm your own definition "away from the light". But I don't know where the -ex comes from on the end. Perhaps this is a "Latinised" version of the word?

I just looked up Argus and you're right about that too. So I would say that Argus Apocraphex means "Hidden Giant". I wonder if there is any significance in the fact that this Giant had 100 eyes? Argus was supposed to have been a good watchman, even when he was asleep, some of his eyes remained open and watchful...

You have to now interpret this meaning on another level. What does it mean this "hidden giant with 100 eyes"? Something big that can watch you very effcetively, but you can't see it or know that it's there?. In order to answer this you have to look at the context in which the term occurs. If there is a Latin text somewhere with it in then that would be a start. What is the context you heard this term? Sounds astronomical to me, but a preliminary investigation on the web suggest to me that it may also be the name of a band.

Have you searched the archives of the ThirtySecondsToMars forum for it? There are many posts covering a variety of possibile meanings.

Jared and Shannon Leto have referred to it as an old mnuscript, a reference in a paper by a Harvard Prof, an old book.

The digital image they created (For TroubleBunchMusic Interview I think)
that demonstrates the location of the argus apocraphex shows it as inside the brain and there are a variety of reasons to think they are refering to yoiu imagination and creativity when they say to find the argus apocraphex

Since the person tossing around the phrase is heaviliy into Greek ancient history and mythology and iconography you might look for connections there. Pythagorus, Pantheon etc

I would take this to mean (metaphorically) "Hidden Vision", perhaps in reference to an inner ability to see something (not necessariily paranormal, it may refer to our imagination or intellect).

As Jason210 points out, it is definitely anglicized Greek, not Latin.

It is indeed greek.And I am from Greece.
Argus is an island in Greece and that meens Find The Inventory of Argus.
In one of the legends of Greece a king of Argus named Danaos had fifty daughters and they had to marry fifty men from Egypt.But the king didn't want that to happen.So when the men came to Argus he told to his daughters to take the knives he gave them and kill them.They all did what their father told them except from one.Her name was Ypermnistras.Every greek name has his meaning and Ypermnistras means The One Who does not Kill or something like that. I suppose,having that on mind and after you have watched the video clip of Thirty Seconds To Mars,Hurricane,that the legendy they were refering of Argus.

I'm sorry I was wronge.I thought it said Apographex.I know what that means too,though.Apocraphex is a greek word for the hidden,the mystic.
So the translation should be something arround "find the hidden meaning of Argus" or "Find What's Hidden In Argus.".
But the story I said is true so either way it must be referring to that.

Man I saw a very strange painting named argus jun it shows a man on the ground and a woman standing as long as holding another womans breast ... It makes me remember those lesbians in hurricanes uncensored version by 30 seconds to mars which also has the words find argus apocraphex in a scene :shock:

I think it means the Government or Illuminati always watching us they are hidden and the are both very powerful which you could call "Giants." To add to this information is the symbol on Jared Leto's necklace it represents Echelon which can mean a formation, group or what I believe the Echelon Corporation (An American company which designs control networks to connect machines and other electronic devices, for the purposes of sensing, monitoring and control.) So that could be the modern Argus. As you see in "Hurricane by 30 Seconds To Mars" it looks like the "Government" is killing people for their own personal gain aka (Money) and "The People" are trying to fight back giving the band members keys to free them from the grip and surveillance of the "Government" because it is unjust. This is all just theoretical I'm just giving ideas to help you solve this, but I do not fully support my ideas, I'm just spit-balling you thoughts. I hope this helps.

@Riyoke12- That's creepin' me out. Agreed that "Giants" could represent governments, and Echelon represents "the eyes" of the Greek mythological giant Argus. Big Brother watching us is nothing new, right?
And the word apocraphy; hidden from view or away from the light...deep space? Heaven/Hell? The suffix "ex" confused me. One definition I found "pornographic shorthand for exhibitionism", so much pornography in the Hurricane video. Definitely the controlling kind! So maybe that translates into something like hidden in plain view, the way surveillance cameras are. Just your everyday conspiracy theory, or a genius way to promote the band 30 Seconds to Mars? Personally , I'm more intrigued by the religious aspect of this. Argus, superior to all others, indestructible and cannot be touched. God? Apocraphy, hidden from view; known only to the initiated. I read somewhere possibly two books of the Bible not canonized by the church. Hidden from view, etc. Could it be the eyes of God are watching... religious? Or Big Brother watching...government? What about the white mice in the video? We're all just lab rats in one big experiment. Well, that was fun!

When looking at the Leto video, you see that people are dressed up in bondage (Bondage sybolizing slavery or involuntary servitude) If Bondaged, shows that you are submissive and willing to "take out" the ones that are unbondaged, and unbondaged result death. This could defently be sybolizing something that we already see today, with military, and police. You are rewarded for oppressing others.

EVERYONE: It means "Find the hidden words", get it, on 30 seconds to mars's video for "hurricane" those words pop up for less than a half a second, Find the hidden words... get it? It's on minute 9 1/2 in that video, and you can't read it, unless you pause it at that exact time.
