Seems related to uterus, I wonder why the vowel quantity is different.uter (which of two) & ūter (bag or bottle made of an animal's hide)
I came across ūter in Bennett's Easy Latin Stories for Beginners.
And also all it's cognates decido, incido etc...Occīdo (kill, slay, be the ruin of) and Occido (die, be slain, be ruined)
Also the adjective mōrus meaning foolish.Mora (delay) and mōra (blackberries, i.e. the pl. of mōrum).
I once had the Roman army throwing balls (or bowls) at the enemy. Latin vowel pronunciation was not my strength.pōpulus / populus
pīla / pila
incīdere / incidere
OLD?how do you find these
and hence also:levis ('light') vs lēvis ('smooth')
