Ivy or type of shrub or sapling with wide leaves, and which casts a large shadow, which spreads through the land, without the aid from a base, and they do not try to climb. Buy this, God prepared that a gourd should grow up suddenly, offering shade to the prophet, showing the wonders and power of God. And Israel is compared to this kind of plant because, at a certain time, it protected Jonah, that is, Christ, with its shadow while He was awaiting the conversion of the Gentiles, and not even a small rejoicing in Him, but being struck down, making a booth rather than a house, presenting the appearance of houses, but not having a foundation.

A gourd or ivy of bushy kind, or shrubby having broad leaves and sustaining a very dense shadow, which creeps across the ground, and without supports by which is is supported does not seek the heights. But God prepared this, so that rising up on high without any support, it would supply shelter to the prophet in whom the power of God was revealed. Israel is compared to this ivy or gourd, which formerly covered Jonah under its shadow foreshadowing the conversion of the Gentiles to Christ, and it granted great joy to him making a shadow better than a house, having the likeness of a roof, (but) not having foundations.
