  8. Proposals like that do seem rather philosophicalish, actually. Since you technically can't prove it wrong, because the evidence for it can always be bent into the theory's explanation, and...well, philosophy.

    English 'slim' is the same word as German schlimm. There's a certain amount of hiding in plain sight about this, but the meanings are rather different, so I didn't notice it until coming across Dutch slim (which means 'intelligent').

    'Geoffrey Stephen Kirk' 'is an anagram of 'he prints off-key Greek'. I wouldn't say that this dawned on me belatedly – I worked it out, for whatever reason, around 1980 – but there isn't likely to be a more appropriate place to mention it.
