Music Video Umbra Fervet...

By Issacus Divus, in 'Latin to English Translation', Mar 7, 2019.

  1. Forgive me, but the whole thing wouldn't fit there.
This is a song from Bloodborne. It was transcribed by the fans. There are two main transcriptions, marked by the beginning of the song:

    1st TRANSCRIPTION:
    Horror Fini
    Perdit Iter
    Socie perdit
    Sanguine Sancta

    2ND TRANSCRIPTION:
    Umbra Fervet
    Benedictī
    Socie perde
    Sanguine Sancta
    Here is the song:

I find the second transcription much more plausible, as it seems like the former has some made-up Latin and improvised parts, like the background:
    Rete sanguine male
    Prae ista honos

    Sanguine sanctum prae ater

I think that's terribly wrong, as the second transcription says:
    Rete sanguine malum
    Prāvōs nos honor

    Sanguine sanctum fērāle

    So,

    Sanguis fare ore
    Sanguis sanctum casta era

    Rete sanguine male
    Prae ista honos
    Sanguine sanctum prae ater

    Rete sanguine male
    Prae ista honos
    Sanguine sanctum prae ater

    Orti morti
    Esti primoris
E si prae se brie horror sanguine

    Orti morti
    Es veto vertis
    E vete poto

    Orti morti
    Esti primoris
E si prae se brie horror sanguine

    Orti morti
    Es veto vertis

    E vete poto

    Versus:

    Cavē, sane, cavē
    Sanguine sanctum absconditam
    Rete sanguine malum
    Prāvōs nos honor
    Sanguine sanctum fērāle
    Rete sanguine malum
    Prāvōs nos honor
    Sanguine sanctum fērāle
    Orti morti
    Istī immanis bēstiās tendēbāminī āvertēs
    Orti morti
Istī dominis lībertī a vos āverterēminī
    Orti morti
    Bēstiās tendent vincerēminī avērtis imminēns
    Orti morti
Iste immanis lībertī a vos āverterēminī

(I'm sorry. I hope I'm not violating a policy of some kind for threads that are too long, or requesting too much.)

This would all be a breeze if you'd bop me on the head with the kirkhammer a few times.

So, I can tell you that both transcriptions you have are completely wrong. The first line is dubious, but the next three are pretty clear:

    (Dona necem) Grant death
    inimicis unto (your) enemies
    soci(i) perdunt (your) allies perish
sanguine sancta by the holy blood

Now, this isn't great Latin, but it could be much worse. The sense is clear, anyway.
I won't agonize over the rest for the time being, but might come back to it.

    Be safe, Champion of Ash.
  3. I'm sorry, Hunter. All I've got is an axe...

    Anyway. So both are wrong?
And the actual Latin is wrong, too.
I mean, I know that the pronunciation is weird. But you're saying that the Latin itself is average.
And which part are you talking about? The chorus?

Well, 'average' would be putting it lightly.

Pick any part of the transcription you have, and even if it's actually what they're singing (and like I said, I don't want to try to decipher the whole thing), it will be either weird and incoherent (A), or completely ungrammatical nonsense (B).

(A): sanguis fare ore , which could technically mean "speak thou, o blood, with (thy) mouth".
(B): e si prae se bri(a?)e horror sanguine, which can't possibly mean anything ("out if before oneself of wine-jug dread from blood")

As far as the things I pieced together go (and that's if I really pieced them together), a few minor tweaks would make them actually 'good' Latin, e.g.:
Soci perdunt sanguine sancta > Socii perduntur sanguine sancto

  5. Yeah, the one with
(B): e si prae se bri(a?)e horror sanguine
was immediately dismissed in my mind. I mean, the Umbra Fervet one is weird, but not impossible, right?
  6. Ok. You can't torment me with this. You give me a bit of your knowledge, and then you leave for other kingdoms. I get a little bit of Heaven from you, and then I wait. I wait. And that is Hell, until you give me a little bit again.

    lol

Interestingly, your corrected version could be the last 4.5 feet of a hexameter line.

  8. O toi, qui vois la honte où je suis descendue,
    Impacaple Vénus, suis-je assez confondue?
Tu ne saurais plus loin pousser ta cruauté.
Ton triomphe est parfait; tous tes traits ont porté

Huh. Allow me to complete it, then.

*dum dada dum* socii perduntur sanguine sancto
