Latin Readings by Felix Sanchez Vallejo

Vallejo gives great recitations of Latin, better than the majority I've heard yet; he uses a medieval/Italianate pronunciation. And speaks it with exceptional fluency and grace. His files used to be available through Vivarium Novum, but that site is now down.. His recitations of Ciceronis Orationes in Catilinam are available elsewhere now though (included below), as is Caesaris Liber Primus de Bello Gallico. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find any other of his recitations at the moment. I believe De Republica was one of them; and possibly one or two others. If anyone knows of them, please let me know!

Nice link mate and he does indeed have a lovely tone. I might try those recitations at some point soon as he's very easy on the ears.

I've just done the 50 etymology questions. It took me four minutes. I got 49 out of 50, tripping up on "tinsel". I'm not sure I'll ever live it down. I never liked tinsel anyway.

I got 49 out of 50 as well, but I didn't see one on tinsel. This is the only one I got wrong, but it doesn't seem right to me:
Which of the following is NOT derived from the same Latin verb as the others.

1. manage (correct answer)
2. maintain
3. menagerie
4. remainder (your response)
'Remainder' is derived from remanere, and menagerie (whose etymology I had to look up) is ultimately derived from mansio, hence the same as 'remainder'. But 'maintain' is from manus + tenere, is it not?

I figured 'manage' was related to 'maintain' somehow (though it's actually just derived from manus), and guessed that 'menagerie' was the same.

It seems like the questions differ each time; I got neither "tinsel" nor "menagerie etc.".

But indeed something doesn't look quite right there...

It may look bad but I think it actually isn't that bad for someone who's just started Latin. Try again in, say, one year or two (or perhaps even earlier, but just to be sure, depends on your rhythm etc.), and you'll explode the score. ;)

Tinsel is "from" scintilla; I wrongly chose tendo.
They seem to be selecting from a bunch of questions that is bigger than 45 in number. I didn't get the "remainder" question and quite a few others that are only now visible.
It does look like they cocked up your question.

Here's another one from Vallejo mate. This is a complete recording of Book 1 of Augustine's Confessions. I can't wait to be at a level to appreciate this.

No worries Pacis. I'm a slow learner enjoying the slow pace. Great scores from you lot by the way, I hope others from the forum have a bash.

If I weren't so slow a learner at Greek myself, I might have done as good a score as our two lovely geniuses.

Thank you Christian, the link is very nice!

The quiz is difficult for me: 33/50. I'm quite fluent in English but not a native speaker, and some of the English is not easy, either...

@ Christian - thank you for the Vimeo link; that one works.

The other URL continues to throw errors; both in Internet Explorer and Firefox. I've checked the URL, and tried both the http:// and https:// protocols. I've also tried using an online proxy and my mobile phone (using the G3 network), but they can't load the page either.

It is possible their web server is set to block particular URL ranges. Why on earth they'd want to block calls coming from the Netherlands I don't know.
