και τότε μεν εκ του στυππειου μηδε ελπίζων υπεξηλθον

This sentence comes from Lucian.

My attempt at this is " and then I escaped from under the flax though not expecting"

I'm not happy at all with this.

I'm assuming that the μεν is not linked with the δε in μηδε. Therefore μεν is being used like μην and is simply emphasising τότε?

Also I can't for the life of me work out why μηδε is being used, why not ουδε? I've translated ελπιζων concessively but this is certainly wrong as the negative would be ου and not μη.

In summary I'm stumped.

Any help is appreciated
