From the Elder Tree

Hi everyone!
I'm new here but I've always been pretty interested in latin. I took it in high school for a few years but I've lost most of it. Anyway,

I was looking for a translation and would appreciate any help/insight given. I recently traced my family tree as a present for my father and I'm going to present it to him as a gift. Our family name is Elder and I thought it would be interesting to have it labeled 'from the elder tree' in latin.

There is just so much heritage to our family that I thought it'd be good to kind of have it all pulled together with the title in latin.

So If any one could translate From the Elder Tree or something along those lines that would be greatly appreciated!!

Also any insight into which font it might look best printed would be great too, I'd like a it have an authentic look.

I assume that by 'tree' you mean 'family stock, lineage." I would translate your phrase as Ex stirpe veteriore.

There are many heraldic puns, however. Here is a story about the Holden family's motto being "teneo et teneor." (I hold and I am holden).

There are many others, but I'm too lazy to dig them up right now.

So you could do: Ex Sambuco if you wanted to be funny.

(Sambucus is the genus of the elder tree -- not necessarily known that way to the ancient Romans, but it's the best you're going to do if you go this route.)
