Hello is there a better or more idiomatic way of saying "he did not know where it might be" than "nescit ubi sit"?

Thanks so much. I wasn't sure if ubi stopped it from being indirect speech. (Also I forgot what tense I was actually asking about. I should have asked for doesn't know. that's my fault)

He doesn't know where it is would indeed be "nescit ubi sit".

Without context, a read won't immediately know whether "it", "he" or "she" is meant, though. What do you need that sentence for?

ubi introduces the indirect question.
 
Its just for a story, I am also completely missing important details. You have been very helpful. It looks like my original idea was correct, but my own incompetence has complicated things.
