How to Scan and Mark Latin Poetry

Could anyone elaborate as to what Latin scansion is and how it is done?
What is the dactylic hexameter? Please enlighten a clueless fool.

I could do that, but I feel like there are loads of online resources available already as far as this topic is concerned. I think it would be easier for you to try to read up on that topic and then ask questions in this forum if you don't understand something.

I am wondering if it might be more productive initially just to focus on learning the vowel lengths, as if you know them all well, the verses will mostly scan naturally—although you will need to learn a few extra rules.
