There are many places that are mentioned in latin in historical documents. So, for those locations, it is easy to find the latin equivalent. However, these are often big/famous cities/regions, etc.
What do you do for much more modest places, e.g. small villages/cities, or places outside Europe that only have local names?
I think it would be better not to try to translate those names, but then there arises the question of the case.
In the case of small village, I thought using "pagus" or "vicus" + the untranslated name. Example : maneo in pago Auvelais.
What is your opinion about this?
