Malifer means "apple-bearing", and may be applied poetically to the apple-tree. An apple is just malum, with a long 'a'; malum with a short 'a' means "an evil". Unless long vowels are marked (and they usually aren't in Latin texts) the two words are homographs.

Malifer, with a short a, could mean "evil-bearing," but it's more likely that an instance of malifer (a should be long) means "apple-bearing."

Which of course leads one to yet another amusing combination of words in Latin, up there with "bellum bellum":
malifer malifer
"Evil-bringing apple bearer."
