Thanks for clarifying Imber,
I think it's best that I put in the extra "I was" for the sake of making the translation clear for my beginner understanding.

Yes Imber, it was just to make sure he didn't think it was a participle in Latin, as I said here:
It's an acceptable translation, but I want to make sure that you understand that exspectabam is literally "I was expecting".
It's good. Not that the other wouldn't be ok as a bit freer/less literal translation if you had deliberately taken the liberty to translate it as such, but you have first to understand the construction of the Latin and be aware that exspectabam isn't a participle.
