I don't think that's an Ennius quote. At least it wouldn't make sense because it doesn't fit any metre. It appears in Cicero's de amicitia, but I wonder if it wasn't just some general kind of aphorism.

Whereas some of the items put into Jesus's austere, wine-bibbing mouth come across as 'all pomp & circumstance', this is one I really love. Here he is simply Joe Everyman, the soul of us, abashed & laid low, a remonstrance, a reproach.
