Couldn't they just carry them? Newborn kids aren't that heavy.

(I meant "kids" of the goat variety, though the statement applies to those of the human variety as well.)

I suppose they might be more unwieldy to carry than heavy, particularly since there's two of them (and newborn goats probably are pretty restless).

I hadn't considered that possibility, either, but it seems a bit odd that he would mention exactly where they were born (among the hazels and on the hard rock) in that case.

My interpretation is that he mentioned it just as a poetic embellishment and to give us a more vivid and bucolic idea of the scene.
