Tergum/terga tutari

I've seen this expression in a military context, cuius (agminis) frontem et terga Aorsi tutabantur (Tac.Ann.12.16).

Do you think it can work to use it in a more figurative context, talking of one person instead of an army, tergum alicuius tutari (like "protéger les arrières" in French)?
