And indeed it is not surprising, when he is at the same time repairing the things of the past and preparing for the things that seem to be at hand, when he is the only one to have both a plan for bringing peace about and the power to wage war, when he is the one man everyone is watching and the one man to govern everything, when he is occupied with so many and so important matters that he cannot breathe freely, if there should be something that he does not notice, especially since there are so many people who observe his activities and lie in wait for the opportune time in order to set about something of the kind as soon as he relaxes his attention. In addition there is also the fact that, however blessed he may be — as he is — no one in a big family can enjoy so great a blessedness as to have neither any dishonest slave nor any dishonest freedman.
