Why is the twelfth month called December?I tried to translate the sentence
"why is the twelfth month called December" and it turned out like this: cur mensis duodecimus december appello? what do you reckon? Last edited by Latin on Wed Nov 05, 2008 2:43 am, edited 1 time in total.
'is called' must be passive, and it is third person, so you have the wrong form of appello.
I am a Latin student, not a Latin professor. Please see our disclaimer with regards to the accuracy of any translations provided.
Do not ask for a translation in a PM. Peer review picks up many mistakes.
Re: Why is the twelfth month called December? Is "cur mensis duodecimus december appellatur?" better?
What should I write here?

Yeah, that looks good to me. I am only a student - Be sure to read our disclaimer when requesting a translation.
Please post all translation requests in the proper forum - not in a PM! "This seems to have been written in a particularly passionate appropriate. . ." - spammer
Re: Why is the twelfth month called December? When the gregorian calendar came into effect, we added two months, but kept the names for the last four months, even though they no longer represented that number stage.
Re: Why is the twelfth month called December?Actually we didn't add them (not at the time of Gregorian anyway); we shifted New Year's Day from March back to January. Under some conventions, March 24, 1731 would be followed by March 25, 1732.
Read our disclaimer before asking for a translation.
Wait for other opinions; Latin is my hobby. Do not ask for a translation in a Private Message. PM benefits one person, a post - many.
