Protector, defender of the righteous

Post Righteous Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:34 pm

Hey everyone. I am looking to translate the following phrase into Latin so i can inscribe it. A little background may help with the translation. I work in the military/police field and this is to become a motto. It goes as follows:

"Protector/Defender of the Righteous"

"Punisher/Afflicter/Chastiser of the Wicked"

Of course "Wicked" and "Righteous" would include anyone male or female that would fall into the respective category. As far as the "Punisher" part of it, I'm sure there's not a word that is an exact translation, but something with the same depth of meaning would be great. From the research I've done, I've come up with many different words for it and would like insight from someone who understands the meaning I'm trying to convey.

Thanks!

For the first one, Custos/defensor piorum [hominum] and the other: Punitor improborum/malorum [hominum].

I'd go with defensor proborum and ultor malorum, respectively.

Pius means "righteous" only in a religious sense. In classical Latin it's more like "dutiful" or "loyal". Ultor is also a more common word than punitor.
