Borcovicium / Vercovicium

Post jam1e Sat Feb 06, 2010 10:58 am

Hi there,

This may sound a little random, but I'm doing a design project based around Housesteads Roman Fort (Northumberland, UK) and have struggled to find any information on the titled name change.

I wonder, as a starting point, if anyone could shed some light on what they mean perhaps? Vercovicium was the name present on ordnance survey maps and I found Borcovicium after a little digging (1929 ordnance survey i believe), but no reason.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated and thanks!

Some links here and here. Perhaps Borcovicium is a corruption of the other name, but am not sure.
