Just wondering how exactly you guys understand rectos...itus and flexos...orbes in this passage.

(Boethius is describing the motion and interaction of natural things: stars, planets, seasons, elements.)

34 Sedet interea conditor altus
35 rerumque regens flectit habenas,
36 rex et dominus, fons et origo,
37 lex et sapiens arbiter aequi,
38 et quae motu concitat ire
39 sistit retrahens ac uaga firmat;
40 nam nisi rectos reuocans itus
41 flexos iterum cogat in orbes,
42 quae nunc stabilis continet ordo
43 dissaepta suo fonte fatiscant.
44 Hic est cunctis communis amor
45 repetuntque boni fine teneri,
46 quia non aliter durare queant
47 nisi conuerso rursus amore
48 refluant causae quae dedit esse.

"For unless he, calling back their straight paths, forced them again into bent curves/circles/orbits.."?

Ok, thanks. The straight vs. circular imagery is quite important for my thesis, so I want to ensure I'm not missing something.

It makes God sound like a bit of a pervert, if you ask me, but then you didn't.

LOL. It has to do with straight and circular imagery in Greek philosophy, particularly the Timaeus.

I thought you were quite familiar with Ancient Greek philosophies.
