This is a very basic question, and I apologize for my ignorance.
Is the "ae" in 'Curriculum vitae' spelled as 'ae', or as an e tied to an a (hard to explain). Maybe this will paste right. Here is what I mean: Æ .

So, which one is it?

It can be spelled in either way. If I recall, the ligature (the combining of the two letters) became commonplace during the Middle Ages, but was rare before then. I'm not entirely sure, however; all I do know is that in modern times, either is acceptable.
