I don't know if the original passage by Varro has survived, however it is cited by Solinus here:
Gaius Julius Solinus dixit:
Sed quamquam ista sic congruant, palam est prospero illi augurio deberi gloriam Romani nominis, maxime cum annorum ratio faciat cardinem ueritati: nam, ut adfirmat Varro auctor diligentissimus, Romam condidit Romulus, Marte genitus et Rea Siluia, uel ut nonnulli Marte et Ilia; dictaque primum est Roma quadrata, quod ad aequilibrium foret posita. Ea incipit a silua quae est in area Apollinis, et ad supercilium scalarum Caci habet terminum, ubi tugurium fuit Faustuli. Ibi Romulus mansitauit, qui auspicato murorum fundamenta iecit duodeuiginti natus annos, XI k. Mai., hora post secundam ante tertiam [plenam], sicut L.
