Cupido

Cerne cicatrices! Nobis quas illa notavit,
ut poenas saevas, fracta sagitta tua.
Parce ego nec merui lacrumas, iniuste Cupido,
ignea nec possum vulnera tanta pati.
Dique deaeque favent, est et mihi mentula magna,
odisti solus tu Veneris catule.

Ast ego, mi Passer, sine te bene vivere possum
et videor voti certior esse mei. [Ov. Am. 3. XIb.]
Mentior, unde mihi nugae scribuntur inopi?
per Veneres, sine te vivere non potero.

Just one snag. The bird pictured was not known to the Romans and it's not a true sparrow. It's a North American species and though its vernacular name is Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus) it actually belongs to the family Embirizidae (buntings) not the family Passeridae (sparrows). I just thought you'd want to know that.

Are you even an ornithologist on top of all the rest?

I used to be a very active one in my youth, and was going to make a career of it at one time, but circumstances took me in a different direction. Birds are probably still my favourite animals.

... ah ... well I wonder how many directions you might have taken. Btw I'm impressed by the polyvalence of some people here, not only you. Multilinguists, artists, musicians, mathematicians, programmators, jewellers, ornithologists and god knows what else.

Well, an interest in Latin, as it seems, signifies many interests! :)

That's what the Renaissance was all about!
