Yes, I think I had the literal sense of "from" (given the derivation from inde) so strongly in mind that the figurative sense didn't occur to me.

As for the genitive sense as in "the idea of it", that's a figurative sort of motion from too. Compare with de, which means both "from" and "of", and with the English "of" itself, which originally meant "from" — in fact, "of" and "off" are originally one word that developed two slightly different spellings and pronunciations for different usages.
