I've seen both constructions and used both myself. But is one actually more correct?

While you're about it, I also wonder about in/on the forum.

I think 'on' always works. I could say I'd read something in or on a thread, but I saw a poster on a particular thread.

I've added an option to the poll for that sort of answer.

I don't know. And, now that you asked, I can't remember!...

On twitter... (no doubt about this one, for me...)
On a thread?

If I'm on the thread, on the thread. If I'm refering to it, "in that thread (they spoke this or that...)", does this make any sense? :help:

I treat thread in this use as a synonym for conversation or discussion. Therefore, I always use in as I would do in its synonyms.

I'd say "in" a thread and "on" a forum. Maybe this analogy will help: Imagine somebody drawing a bunch of boxes on the ground, where the boxes represent individual threads, and the ground itself represents the forum. So, you're "on" the ground (forum), but "in" a box (thread).

Are Etaoin and I the only ones to ever say "on a thread"?

One can't link to a search, but if you do one for "on a thread" in double quotation marks, you can see who's used the phrase here.

(Bizarrely, it tells you that it won't search for 'on' or 'a' because they're too common, but it's lying.)
