ipsi a Rege Galliae restitueretur

More 16th century Latin:

Vbi autem animaduertit sesua [printed thus, I assume a typo] libertate Regem grauiter offendisse, secessit in praedia, quae possidet in ditione Ducis Sabaudiae, vbi duxit vxorem antequam ipsi a Rege Galliae restitueretur.

I’m mainly puzzled by whom ipsi refers to and what is the subject of restitueretur. He married his wife before she was restored to him?

It's tempting to read ipse instead of ipsi, it would be quite transparent: "before he was brought back from exile by the King of France".
