Is "attrition" derived from the Greek word "tribein"....

...via the Latin "atterere"?

In another forum (sciforums.com) I claimed that the English word "attrition" was derived from the Greek word "tribein", forgetting that it was obviously a Latin form.

Is "tribein" (Greek) nevertheless related to "atterere" (Latin) ? Perhaps we cannot say ?

Both words mean "to rub". Are their similar(ish) forms coincidental?
