How accurately did ancient sculptures/busts depict their subjects? When seeing Caesar's face, for example, are we really facing it?!

@PVER BRASILIANVS, see if you can access the following book, which I have read. It gives an excellent overview of Ancient Greek stone portraiture, discussing the fidelity of the representations to the men depicted, etc. Of course, many of the portraits which we have of famous Greeks are Roman copies of Greek originals; the Romans closely followed the Greeks in most artistic matters, having a few notable innovations of their own such as the arch, the dome...and perhaps in veristic depiction (though I don't know enough about it to say).


The author of this book, G.M.A. Richter, specialized in ancient art, especially Greek and Roman portraiture in both stone and other media. As you can see in the list of works depicted in the first of the links below, she wrote a book about Roman portraiture, as well.
