School mottoes

My school motto, underneath a badge showing bees buzzing round a hive, was FERVET OPUS. Too true! This was the (once) prestigious Wade Deacon Grammar School for Boys, Widnes! I believe many football clubs have Latin mottoes too. Any good ones out there?

Interestingly, that motto comes from Virgil's Georgics IV.169, where he is describing the art of bee-keeping: Fervet opus, redolentque thymo fragrantia mella. "The work glows, and the honeys smell of fragrant Thyme." Interesting because Virgil is deliberately conflating the effort to gather the honey--opus--with the product of that work--the mella.

That's poetic and all, but since when does honey smell remotely like thyme?

Honey smells like thyme when they have gathered pollen from thyme in bloom. We have a lot of thyme in our garden and it is covered in bees when it blooms, it smells amazing.

Ah, that makes sense. And here I was wondering what kind of "thyme" Virgil must have been smoking...
